days three-six...
oceans of view, 100 times, greatest thing, all the feeling, if they only knew
oceans:
drums- same close mike setup w/ludwig 15" silver sparkle
2nd drums- rode & neuman & d112 on slingerland kick, pearl snare, and
vista lite rack tom with green slingerland floor, $5 hats
keys: mtron (software) french horn, omnichord, mtron strings
vibes: manley reference cardioid
this one took a while to get the basics down. we kept arguing over the
arrangement. in fact, bryce ended up having to alter the melody/lyrics
a bit when he went back to do vocals since we played it differently than the
earlier versions.
100 times:
drums- same, but with bosphorous ride
keys- casio brass (this amazing little keyboard was recently stolen...) on chorus
(its the only chordal sound happening over the guitars), rhodes, wurly
reverse guitars thru line 6 delay, vibes, rhodes...
all the feeling:
drums: same w/ 64 red sparkle slingerland snare
we used the vibes/glckespiel/timpani from the 1680 demo recorded in one 1 evening
at the university of tulsa. the weird r2d2 sound in between the verses
in bryce on the rhodes delay trick. the big drums in the verses were recorded
with one mic and squashed through 3 or 4 1176s. bryce virtually ad libbed
the melody in the verse as well, since his old melody wouldn't fit over jeff's
guitar madness.
greatest thing:
drums: same w/pearl snare
2nd drums: royer knee mic through distressor
guitars: bassman(neuman), deluxe (royer) slide part (kay amp & 57)
acoustic: km84 (?)
bass: tlm103
rhodes: tlm 103 or akg 414
vibes: manley
keys: minikorg"thru neve
piano: manley
percussion: rode
vocals: rode thru 1176 doubled through mxr distortion+
if they only knew: (didn't take too good of notes on this one...)
drums: same close mics, 64 sling snare
in the mix, we told colbert we wanted this one to sound swampy like nick drake
or mazzy star or something.
day 7 "no one could ever take your face" & "all the
feeling"
guitars: royer/sm57 on deluxe, kay, and bassman
piano: royer/manley reference cardioid thru distressor
keys: reason strings/vent organ through dr. sample (we sampled the vent organ
lines directly off of the 1680 demo version since i couldn't get it quite right)
acoustic: km84s
days 8-10 overdubs, vocals, and "i don't wanna....infinite keys"
we recorded infinite keys pretty much live...it took us a few takes to get the
feel right. the piano part is kind of advanced rhythmically, so it was
hard to line up. but in a few takes we had the basics. by
this late in the sessions, i gave up taking notes and eating and was just hoping
we got everything we needed before the mix.
